RANFURLY FIRE

BAKERY DESTROYED Fire demolished the Maniototo Bakery, in Ranfurly, during tho night. The building, which is only eight years old, was of double brick construction. The first intimation of the fire came half an hour after midnight, when a series of loud explosions was heard. There is no fire brigade in Ranfurly, and! residents attempted to save the building, but it was soon evident that these efforts were hopeless. Working with bucket pumps, the volunteers then concentrated on savng the Bank of New South Wales, a wooden building about 15ft away. Damage to this was averted by dint of strenuous work on the part of residents. The bakery, however, was a complete loss.
