CANADIAN CIGARETTES
UNFAIR DISTRIBUTION ALLEGED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 17. " Tobacconists throughout the Auckland province have expressed great dissatisfaction at the grossly unfair distribution of . the recently-arrived Canadian cigarettes," said Mr R. M. Carter, secretary of the Auckland Retail Tobacconists and Hairdressers' Association to-day. "While tobacconists_and grocers received only very limited allocations' which permit them to give the public only scanty supplies, certain departmental stores have apparently been treated with such generosity that they are able to sell to the public as much as two cartons a customer and their supplies seem well nigh inexhaustible," said Mr Carter. He added that the licenses to import tobacco and cigarettes were issued to importers on condition that supplies were distributed to retailers> in relation to existing quotas, and this practice was adopted with the recently-distributed English cigarettes. It appeared that there had been some bad bungling regarding the distribution of these Canadian cigarettes, which called for an inquiry by the Department of Supply
