SERVICE VOLUNTEERS
MORE ATTRACTIVE CONDITIONS (Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 15. A new scheme for attracting 86,500 volunteers for the services was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr C. R. Attlee, in the House of Commons. Mr Attlee said the scheme did not necessarily mean that insufficient troops were forthcoming in the ordinary way. The new scheme was .intended to accelerate the intake of volunteers who would receive under the scheme, the maximum bounty and war gratuity of £125 for four years' service, plus £8 for a civilian-outfit. _ The Government offered the opportunity of volunteering for a short-term engagement to men now serving and those released.
