PORT CHALMERS AFFAIRS

MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last night. Present were the mayor (Mr H. S. Watson), Crs J. T. Knewstubb, J. Matthews, H. Williamson, W, D. Campbell, A, L. S. Cassie, F. C. Smith, W. J. L. Crawford, and R. W. Edgar. OVERHEAD BRIDGE. The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, wrote stating that the council's suggestion for improvements to the overhead bridge at Port Chalmers had been investigated. The replacing of the existing side walls would be a costly work. Proposals for the reconstruction of the main highway were under consideration, and this would possibly involve alterations to _ or removal of this bridge. Such being the case, it did not appear desirable to go to the expense of altering the bridge at the/present time.—Received. CENTENNIAL FUNDS. In reply to a letter from the. Otago Centennial Association explaining that steps were being "taken to secure the passage of legislation empowering "local bodies to expend moneys out of their general revenue for the purpose of providing funds towards the celebration of the centenary of Otago and of making grants to the Otago Centennial Association, it was agreed' that the council 6hould be included in the. appeal. REPAIRS TO ROAD. The Port Chalmers-Aramoana main highway was the subject of a letter from the District Highways Board, which stated that an inspection had been carried out, and the road was considered to be definitely in need of

improvement. The road would be gircn a iairly high .priority amongst highway estimates, and councillors could rest assured that it would have the support of the highways engineer (Mr C. Langbein) when highway estimates were being considered.—The letter was received, and the mayor and town clerk were instructed to keep the matter before the department. SOIL AND RIVERS. A letter from the Soil Conservation and Rivers Contrpl Council, Wellington, intimated! that a meeting was to be convened to consider the setting up of a catchment district to include, in addition to the Clutha area, the Taieri and metropolitan area of Dunedin and the small catchments to the north.— The mayor'was appointed to represent the council. FINANCE. The report of the General Committee drew attention to the satisfactory state of the borough finance at the close of the financial year on March. 31, all accounts being in credit. Eeceipts from all soui'ces for the year were £17,833 16s 4dl, and payments £18,367 13s Id. General receipts amounted to £11,538 12s Ud, and payments £11,929 5s lid. Gas department receipts were £1,323 3s ,4d, and payments £2,222 2s 9d. , Scheme 13 payments for the year amounted to £5,216" 4s sd.—Adopted.
