AUCKLAND ZOO
OVERSEAS ADDITIONS In a report to the City Council Parks Committee the curator of the Auckland Zoological Park, Colonel E. R. Sawer, has stated that arrangements have been made to strengthen the collection of exhibits at the zoo. During the past six years the collection has been depleted by natural losses and the impossibility of importing animals. Colonel Sawer states that the Taronga Zoological Park, Sydney, has received from the Aucklaul City Council a pair of pig-tailed monkeys and six keas. The park has sent in return a pair of monitor lizards. Other exhibits awaiting shipment include a pair of lion cubs, a pair of wombats, a pair of native companions (Australian cranes'), one Tasmariian devil, a pair of pelicans, and pairs of cassowaries, Cape Barren geese, Nicobar pigeons and echidnas, or spiny anteaters. The council has sent the Zoological Gardens, Melbourne, a young hippopotamus valued at £2OO and is receiving one pair of lions, a male jaguar, a pair of maned geese, a pair of monitor lizards,.three pairs of Gippsland water lizards anl a pair of huanacos, which are related to the llamas. This collection is valued at £IOO, leaving a ballance of £IOO due to the council, which will be settled by a cash payment. The Zoological Society of San Diego, California, is receiving six keas, six paradise duck and six pukekos, and a pair each of wallaroos and Hamadryad baboons from the council, which is receiving in return one pair each of leopard cubs, jaguar cubs, sea lions, pumas, spider monkeys, bison, Canadian wood duck and blue birds, and a female coyote. However, to obviate difficulties in foreign exchange, the society has been requested to limit the consignment to the value of the council's shipment. It is thought that it will be some time before the exhibits are delivered owing to difficulties in obtaining shipping space.
