FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

DHUIDISM The Olive Branch Juvenile Lodge was entertained at the fortnightly meeting of the Lily of the Valley Lodge, Forester's Hall, Albany street. Following on this lighter side of the evening, the lodge conducted its business as usual. Considerable discussion took place on the grand lodge order paper. Arrangements Avere completed for the concert and dance function on May 1, which is to be the lodge's " welcome home " to returned servicemen members. An excellent programme has been arranged by A. D. Bro. Holdway, and officers and members of lodges in Nos. 1 and 2 districts, Vvith their lady partners, will be made very welcome. Arch Druid Bro. C. A. McLean presided over a well-attended meeting of Otago Lodge No. 1. ' U.A.O.D. Usual routine business was carried out and, after the bards had reported on the"sick brethren, £32 5s sick pay was passed for payment. Arch Druid Bro. Miller .'and officers and members of Linden Lodge paid an official visit, and were accorded a hearty welcome. Supper was served, and the members settled down to a game of euchre. FORESTERS There was a good attendance of members at the last meeting of Court Pride of the Leith, A.0.F., and the D.C.R., Bro. A. W. Jones, along with I.P.D.C.R. Bro. L. J. Neil son, D.T., Bro. J. Hope, and the district secretray, Bro. J. K. Macfie, were also in attendance. The district officers T»*ere welcomed by the C.R., Bro. A. Wheeler, and received the usual toast. Bro. S. G. Gaudin reported on the activities' of the Court's cricket club, which gained first place on a tie. - The election of officers resulted as follows: —C.R., Bro. A. R. Wright; S.C.R., Bro. S. G. Gaudin; S.W.,'Bro. A. S. Jones; J.W.. Bro. J. H. Cummings: 5.8., Bro. C. E. F. Gaudin; J. 8.. Bro. F. R. Harraway, and M.S., Bro. D. W. Johnston. The district C.R., and the I.P.D.C.R. installed the newly elected officers, who _ all returned thanks. All the district officers' addressed the members, and met with an attentive hearing. One new member was admitted in the usual manner. The. Foresters' tribute to the fallen was ably rendered by the D.C.R., and honoured in silence prior to the close of the meeting. PROTESTANT ALLIANCE

' The usual fortnightly meeting of Loyal Excelsior 'Lodge, No. 41, was held in the P.A. Hall, Green Island. W.M. Bro. V. J. Crimp presided over a good muster of officers and members. The Hall Committee was complimented on the excellent renovations to the lodge hall, and during the winter months it is proposed to indulge in some indoor sports. After routine business had been discussed, the lodge adjourned for a social hour. PICNIC COMMITTEE The final meeting of the Combined United Friendly Societies' Picnic Committee, was held in the A.O.F. district office. Bro. A. B. Muir, 1.0.0. F., presided over a good muster of members. Bro. Muir reported that the picnic held at Wingatui had been a big success. He extended his thanks to Bro. Drysdale, P. A., and Bro. Thompson, V.A.0.D., whose duties had kept them fully occupied during the day. A letter of congratulations was received from Bro. A. V. 'Gain, of the 1.0. R. The secretary, Bro. Wilson, A.0.F., was instructed to write and thank all firms for donations and Dr M. F. Blain for judging the baby show. MANCHESTER UNITY. Members of the district executive attended the meeting of Loyal Albion in full force. The newly appointed officers were duly introduced and officialy welcomed by the N.G. A welcome home was extended to P.G. Bro. Len. Anderson, recently returned from service overseas. Bro. R. Ferguson was appointed guardian for the remainder of the term. Five new members were recommended for initiation. Representatives of all city and Suburban lodges responded to the customary toast. Intimation of the combined Qtago memorial service to be held in the Lodge room of Loyal Dunedin on the evening of April 25, -was received. The speaker will be the Rev. L. D. Groves. Loyal Valley hold an interesting meeting, N.G. Bro. R. McFarlalne presiding and welcoming the newly appointed district officers. Delegates to the recent district meeting gave a comprehensive report of proceedings, .and returned thanks for their appointment. Ordinary business disclosed a fairly large amount of sickness among members. Officers of Loyal Hand and Heart attended to participate in the prearranged debate, taking the affirmative side. The subject, 'ls universal peace possible?' was thoroughly in-

vestigated and produced some illuminating facts, also a litttle humour. The adjudicator, P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Robb, found in favour of the negative side and gave what he considered some necessary advice on matters of debate. The official visit of sister lodges to Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge, Port Chalmers, eventuated on Wednesday evening, and, despite adverse weather conditions, members of citv lodges attended in good numbers. Six members of the district executive were also prosent aiul received a hearty welcome. Complimentary reference was made to the stewardship of P.P.G.M. Bro. A. Robb during his term as an executive officer. Customary toasts were honoured and courtesies exchanged. The remained of the evening was spent in social intercourse.
