HEAVY FINES
SYDNEY MASONIC CLUB BREACHES OF RATIONING REGULATIONS SYDNEY, April 15. Butter and meat supplied to the Masonic Club without coupons resulted in five men being fined in a special Federal court to-day. iMr L. C. Badham, K.C., who prosecuted, said: "The Masonic Club seems to think that it is entitled to get butter no matter who else goes •without 1 . So long as it is for entertaining servicemen the rest of the community uui go hang." The magistrate, Mr Bromhead, said that evidently no profit was made on any of the transactions. At the same time, the offence struck at the root of the whole rationing system. it was pleaded in defence that the club had extended honorary membership to 3,500 Australian servicemen and 2,000 United States and English servicemen. One defendant was fined a total of £2OO on five charges of supplying butter without coupons. Two others were fined £4O each. The assistant manager was fined a total of £55 on charges relating to meat, and two others were fined £3O and £25 respec T tively.
