NAZI SPY RING
ARRESTS IN SHANGHAI SHANGHAI, April 15. The American authorities arrested seven alleged members of a German espionage ring, including Lieutenantcolonel Ludwig Ehrhardt, who is reported to have been Hitler's personal friend, and chief of the Nazi fifth column sent to the Balkans, also Herr Habenicht, a cryptograph expert, who is reported to have cracked the United States coastguard code, enabling U-boat packs to raid American shipping. The spy ring operated as late as September, 1945, in violation of the Nazi surrender terms. All are charged with war crimes as the result of activities hostile to the United States.
