PLANTATION FIRE
BLAZE IN CANTERBURY DISTRICT RESIDENTS FIGHT FLAMES (P.A.) ASHBUIRTON, Feb. 13. After destroying a stable and a woolshed, the property of Mr 0. H. Barton, at Carew last evening, a fire spread to the adjoining plantation belonging to the county council and • was atil! burning this morning. The fire gained a hold on the plantation, in which there is a fair proportion of dry timber, which was blown down by the gales last winter. Fortunately there are several races near the plantation, and these provided a good source of .water, for fighting the flames. In addition to the fire tender of the county council, about 60 residents of the district are combining in an effort to keep the fire in check. A strong wind during the night made the task of the firefighters difficult, and they did good work in preventing a rapid spread.
