AUTOMATIC FLIGHT

NO HAND NEED TOUCH CONTROLS AMERICA'S NEW EQUIPMENT (Rec. 10.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, February 3. The army air force has developed automatic equipment enabling an aircraft to take off and fly on a pre-selected course and land without a human hand' touching the controls, says the Associated Press. The instruments are already installed in a transport plane whose pilots and crew do nothing but monitor the automatic equipment. The plane is not designed to fly without a crew. The automatic equipment was .developed in four months' research by the air force's all-weather section, whose chief, Colonel Ben Kelsey, said new doors were now open to safe flying regardless of the weather, because the equipment was not affected by the weather. It would now be possible to make flights to any point by pre-selec-tion, and the-day was not far distant when it would be possible to sit in a plane, push a button marked with the desired destination, and do nothing but monitor the equipment until the aircraft reached, the airport.
