WAGER OR GIFT?
EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMISSION ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES (Rec. 12.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 25. Giving evidence at the Royal Commission into alleged irregularities in the Tasmanian Forestry Department, A. G. Newman denied that there had been any secrecy about a bet he had had with the Tasmanian Minister of Forests, Colonel W. P. Taylor. Newman, who is the part-owner of the 1945 Grand National Steeplechase winner, Quixotic, referred to a 50 to 1 bet he had had with Taylor on the outcome of the race. Newman said there were no\ other people . present when he paid Taylor the money in his own home. Commissioner Kirby is inquiring whether the gift of £SOO was made to the Minister in the guise of a wager on Quixotic.
