LAWN TENNIS

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS OTAGQ IN TWO SEMI-FINALS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 24. The semi-finals of both singles events were reached to-day in the New Zealand junior lawn tennis championships. Auckland has two players in each event, Otago has one in each, Wellington has one in the boys' singles, and Canterbury one in the girls' singles. It was an interesting day's play in perfect weather and on courts which had fully recovered their speed after the rain of the previous day. In the boys' singles J. A. Barry (Auckland), the titleholder, will meet A. Robinson (Auckland), and V. J. Donnelly (Otago) will meet R. H. Arbuckle (Wellington). The defending girl champion-, Miss Jean Mac Gibbon, (Canterbury), will meet Miss Valerie Johnson (Auckland), and Miss Marion Robertson (Otago) will play Miss Heather Redwood (Auckland). One of the best matches of the day was that between 0. M. Ellis (Otago) and A. N. Bailey (Canterbury). After a shaky start, Ellis showed more agfressiveness and greater ability to nish off the openings that presented themselves during the long rallies. Ellis unexpectedly went down to an Otago country player, V. J. Donnelly, in the quarter-final. His game had obviously suffered through his long struggle' with Bailey, but Donnelly made skilful use of his great; reach to volley and smash well. There were no surprises in the girls.' singles, and none of the , four semifinalists has yet lost a set_ in this event. Miss Robertson, the -Eall Otago player, was in control throughout both her matches. Few of the players hit the ball so consistently hard, and she makes surprisingly few mistakes. Results:—
