DE GAULLE'S SUCCESSOR
M. GOUIN ELEGTED INTERIM PRESIDENT OF FRANCE &' (Rec! 11 a.m.) PARIS, January 23. _ The 62-year-old Socialist, M. Felix Gouin, has been elected interim President of France. He will serve as President of the Provisional French Government until the Constituent Assembly finishes its work in May., "The three main parties appeared to have agreed to his ' face-saving ' appointment," says the ' Daily Mail's' Paris correspondent. "M. Gouin is already beginning discussions to form a Government, while the Frenchman in the streets' asks anxiously: ' Why has de "Gaulle abandoned us? ' " It is understood that M. Bidault is continuing as. Foreign Minister, while iM. Xhorez, whose candidature for Prime Ministership was suddenly withdrawn, will be likely to have a key-post in the new Government.
