BONNER ELIMINATES CRAWFORD j . ADELAIDE, January 23. By defeating Jack Crawford in the Men's Singles, Max .Bonner, of Victoria, caused the first major upset in the Australian tennis championships. Bonner won, 10-8, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. He has now entered the quarter-finals with Quist, Pails, Brown, Harper, Brodie, Hopman, and Bromwich. Bonner' and Crawford both relied on the accuracy of their ground stroking. The protracted first set, in which at times the ball crossed the net SO or 60 times before a point was decided,- probably sealed the fate of the match. Crawford began to tire, but Bonner maintained steady play throughout, giving nothing away. This is the first time since 1926 that Crawford has failed to reach the quarterfinal in any Australian championship* tournament, national or State. Bonner will play Quist in the quarter-finals..
