OTAGO'S FINE RECOVERY GREAT STANDS FOR SEVENTH AND TENTH WICKETS SMITH, WATT, SILVER, AND FREEMAN IN PICTURE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. Thanks to hue batting by L. D. Smith and devastating bowling by the two fast medium bowlers, R. Silver and T. Freeman, Otago, made a splendid recovery against Wellington on the third day of the Plunket Shield match at the Basin Reserve to-day. At the end of the second day’s , play* Otago had lost four wickets for 68 runs in reply to Wellington’s opening innings of 322. Resuming to-day, Otago had six wickets down for 93 runs when Smith came in and assisted Watt to put on 59 runs for the seventh wicket. Smith carried on to add 84 for the tenth wicket with R. Silver, and of the pair was first man out with 85 to his credit. The Otago total reached, 237, 85 runs behind Wellington’s total. The visiting bowlers, Silver and Freeman, further bridged the gap by dismissing five Wellington batsmen in the second innings for 19 runs. This means that Wellington is only 104 runs ahead with five wickets in hand. Wiren and Rowe opened Wellington’s second innings at 5.5 p.m. Rowe was clean bowled by the fifth ball of Silver’s second over alter scoring 5, and one wicket was down for 5 runs.
