THE LEVANT
ANGLO-FRENCH POLICY TROOPS TO BE WITHDRAWN (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 21. The intention of Britain and France to ensure independence for the Levant States is declared in the text of joint policy in statements relating to the regrouping and withdrawal of troops from the Levant. Each Government also affirms its intention to do nothing to supplant the interest and responsibilities of the other in the Middle East, having full regard to the political status of the countries in question. One of the objects of the discussions at present proceeding in Beirut will be the fixing of a very early date for the beginning of the withdrawal programme. Evacuation will include provision for the retention of sufficient forces to guarantee security until_ the United Nations Organisation's decision on the establishment of collective security in the Levant area.
