The change from the present navy to an atomic age navy would be as_ great as that from sail to steam, said the Third Sea Lord of the Admiralty, Rear'Admiral C. S. Daniel, in a speech at the launching of the Tiger class cruiser Blake. He added that there was nothing more expensive than an obsolete navy, but construction would necessarily be on a small scale in the next two or three years. " We have entered the atomic era," he said, " ■which will most certainly have a far-reaching effect on naval construction. I believe we shall find one day that we are in a position to start on a radically new naval construction programme."
