SECOND-YEAR GLASSES . ADMISSION OF 120 STUDENTS The Otago University Council has decideu to auinit 120 students to secondyear classes at the Medical School trom the 347 applications for admission. The applications fell into nine groups. The groups and the number of applications in each are as follows, the number accepted in each group being given in parentheses:— ■ Students who have passed the intermediate examination, and claim that their courses have been seriously interfered with by war service overseas, and who would not otherwise have qualified lor admission in competition with other students: 16 (16. subject to verification of war service). Students who have not passed the intermediate examination, who claim preference for war service overseas, and who may yet complete the intermediate by passing at the special examinations in February, 1940: 11 (11 places reserved).' Students who have previously attended second-year classes, but have not passed the annual terms examination: 23 (18). Students who have completed the subjects of the intermediate examination and are also holders of university degrees: 25 (24). Students who have completed the intermediate examination, and hope to complete a university degree this year: 4 (4). One student who qualified for admission in 1945, but was not admitted through the late notification of his having completed the medical preliminary.1 (1). Students who have failed the intermediate examination, but by virtu re of war service may have their marks at the special examination recognised (on a competitive basis): 8 (5). Students who have passed the intermediate examination and are not entitled to special preference: 169 (41)-. Students who have failed to complete the intermediate examination: 90 (nil).
