MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE j MEETS SOLE SELECTOR APPOINTED Mr W. S. Arniitage presided over the meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Cricket Association which was held last night. Mr A. Ronaldson, formerly a member of the Wellington Cricket Association Management Committee, was • present by invitation, and was welcomed by the chairman. . JUNIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE. The question of the Junior Advisory Committee being represented on the Management Committee of the association was discussed, and while it was recognised that the rules would not permit of the addition of a delegate, it was resolved to invite the Junior Committee tn send a representative'along to the Management Committee meetings to act in an advisory capacity. UMPIRES FOR JUNIORS. Mr E. H. Downes raised the question of securing umpires for junior matches. Now that the standard of play had been improved in the lower grades, he said, it was necessary that competent umpires should be appointed to as many matches as possible. Other speakers agreed that an effort should be made to obtain the services of. and to train, additional umpires, and Messrs W. A. Hadlee and E. Downes were appointed a sub-commit-tee to go into the matter. SOLE SELECTOR. Whether a selection committee of three or a sole selector should be .appointed to choose representative teams was the next'subject, debated.—Mr T. Hughes -moved that there be three selectors, and Mr Hadlee put (forward an amendment favouring a sole selector.—Mr Hadlee's amendment was carried, and Mr S Duncan was elected as sole selector. It was further decided to appoint a practice captain, who would be present at. representative practices and keep a register of those players who attended, and to control the practices generally. COUNCIL'S ANNUAL MEETING. Mr W. R. Brinsley submitted a report of the proceedings at the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council, which report was considered and received, and Mr Brinsley thanked for his services as delegate A clause in the report stated that the council had nereed to the resumption of Plunket Shield matches, which are i£> be_ limited to four days' duration, and, in view of a possible visit from an overseas team, that the series be completed as early as possible. The suggested dates for the Otago and Canterbury match at Dunedin—namely. February 1. 2. 4. and accepted, and the Auckland Association advised that its team would play in Dunedin at the New Year PROTESTS AGAINST MERGERS. The North-east Valley Club wrote stating that although it considered that the principle adopted by the Management Committee in respect of enforced amalgamation of senior.teams was not in the best interests of cricket, it agreed to that principle in the' meantime. The Albion-Y.M.C.A; Club also wrote stating that it was definitely opposed to the policy of the merging of teams, a policy which, in its case, had caused the resignations of some of its most valuable members. In view of the fact that the season had begun, however, it would agree to carry on, but with' the understanding that the position would be reviewed at the end of the season. The correspondence was received, the Chairman pointing out that it had already been decided that the whole position was to be reviewed at a later date. MINOR ASSOCIATIONS. On the motion of Mr Hadlee, it was decided to communicate with the minor associations in the province inviting them to nominate players for aeiection in the Otago representative teams and in the Otago Brabin Shield team. Mr Hadlee remarked that this would be an act of courtesy which was only due to the minor bodies, and it would at least help the game in the country districts.

PUBLICITY FOR JUNIORS

Mr Hadlee commentedon the failure' of clubs to supply results of their, junior matches for publication. While- senior matches were adequately, reported; he said, little was seen of the junior results. ' . j ' • v Mr 0. Gorrie expressed pleasure at the fact that .the newspapers had resumed publishing the full scores of senior matches, hut agreed ..that steps should be taken to see .' that junior results got in also. It was agreed to.appoint a sub-com-mittee with a. view to remedying the matter. .'.-. * '.. TOUR ABANDONED. , The New Zealand Cricket Council wrote stating that advice .had- been received from the services -authorities that it would .now. be impossible .to. retain players for a cricket tour., The arrangements for that tour, were, therefore, cancelled.—Noted.
