ANGLING

NEW HUT ON WAIPAHI Consideration of tenders for the | building of a hut on the Waipahi i River was the chief business at the .monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Anglers' Association. Mr Lance Griffiths was the successful tenderer, and it is anticipated that the hut will be completed before the end of November. Another important matter for discussion was the affiliation of all Otago clubs, letters having been received from of these clubs asking for information. It was agreed that a discussion be held" with all • members of visiting clubs at 1 the Harry Williams Challenge Shield competition, on the Pomahaka on November 25, when it is expected that at least eight clubs will be represented. It was decided that should a member desire, he may purchase a key and have the use of the Waikouaiti and Shag River huts for the annual fee of ss, plus Is a night for a bed. This will give members a long-needed convenience in having some shelter and a place to boil their billies, arid, further, a place to dry out should they fall in. Members were reminded of the competition on the Waikouaiti on Saturday, 3 o'clock till midnight. The weigh-in will be at the club's hut at Orbell's Crossing at 12.30. A party fished this river on Friday night, but not one big fish was heard and only two small fish were caught. Conditions were poor, and the weather very uncertain. Too much water in the majority of our streams and the cold, changeable weather has retarded the hatch of flies, forcing the fish to feed on the bottom. What was needed was a spell of warm weather for the fish to rise.

Eels, it was reported, accounted for large quantities of fry" and fingerlings, also full-sized trout. The' more eels anglers accounted for the better it would be for the sport. /
