PORTUGUESE ELECTIONS
OPPOSITION'S REQUEST REFUSED LONDON, October 18. President Carmona refused to intervene in the matter of Dr Salazar’s refusal to grant free elections, in spite of a last-minute appeal b.v Opposition leaders. One of the latter, Dr Alves, said after the interview that the President based bis refusal on the law as it stands, and his expressed admiration for Dr Salazar’s regime. The election nominations begin to-morrow.
