"MONARCHIST AT HEART"

SPANISH AMBASSADOR RESIGNS

LONDON, October 18. The Duke of Alba, after saying goodbye to His Majesty on his resignation as Spanish Ambassador in Great Britain, issued a statement proclaiming himself a monarchist. He said he had resigned in accordance with a Royal manifesto issued in the middle of March.

“ With my monarchist background the Royal command did not permit me to remain in London as the representative of a regime with which the man I consider my sovereign declared

himself in disagreement —as indeed 1 was myself—holding it to be harmful to the best interests of Spain,” he said. He added that if the intention was to modify and stabilise the' political organisation in Spain on the basis of a monarchy, as personified by Don Juan, the principles that Don Juan aspired to apply should be put into practice. He had seen no practical attempt made to come to an understanding with Don Juan.
