NOTABLE SOLDIER
MALTA'S WAR-TIME GOVERNOR
VISITING DUNEDIN NEXT YEAR
Lieutenant-general Sir William Dobbie, G.C.M.G., K.C.8., D. 5.0., .Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the island of Malta during the perilous years from 1940 to 1942, w'ho will visit New Zealand early next year, has agreed to address a public meeting when he comes to Dunedin. This distinguished soldier has expressed a wish to speak to the young people of the city, and his subject will be ‘The Hand of God in Malta.’ Lady Dobbie will address women’s organisations on her long experience of Army life and in Malta. Sir William and Lady Do'bbie are expected to arrive in the Dominion from America at the beginning of February, and l after a tour of six weeks in this country will go to Australia. Arrangements in connection with Sir William’s visit to Dunedin were initiated at a meeting held yesterday under the sponsorship of the Religious Work Committee of the Y.M.C.A. The Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) presided, and there were present representatives of various Christian denominations. The following committee was appointed:—Chairman. Mr G. Buckley; vice-chairman, the Rev. R. T. Dodds; secretary, Mr J. 11. D. Miller; treasurer, Mr W. D. G. Hartley; committee—the Revs. W. A. Hamblett, Kenneth Bell, A. L. Gosling, W. G. Slade, E. R. Vickery, Messrs J. L. Salmond, W. E. Earnshaw, A. W. Paterson, Clifford Brown, and J. Broadbent. The Mayor intimated that it. was_ intended to give the distinguished visitor a civic reception.
