THE NEW YORK DISPUTE
GANGSTER TACTIGS EMPLOYED
NEW YORK,. October 17. Squads of extra police roving the waterfront prevented violence as prospects improved for a settlement of the wharf labourers' strike. Only 7,000 wharf labourers, -however, have returned to work so far, according to impartial figures, while officials of the National Maritime Union, which is supporting the wharf labourers,.announced that they had notified. ship operators' that the situation continues to be unsafe, for which reason , members cannot safely board ships because of gangster tactics employed by "goon squads." At least 50 army veterans, wearing army blouses and union buttons, appeared on jobs in Brooklyn shouting to tne pickets, " You guys made plenty of dough while we were in the army, now we are going to get some of it."
