POST-WAR CAREERS

CORRESPONDENCE COURSES FOR N.Z. SOLDIERS (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent.) LONDON, October 17. Books and periodicals bought in Great Britain during the war for the New Zealand Education and Rehabilitation Service in the Middle East cost £22,000. Other expenditure totalled £12,000. This buying has now been terminated following a visit to London of Lientenant-colonel R. B. Shulze, formerly of Taihape, who was assistant director of the Education and Rehabilitation Service. Some of the books are now being used by 250 New Zealanders at the N.Z.E.F. School of Education at Chianciano, Italy, where they are studying for university and trade examinations which are to be held next month.

The responsibility of buying them belonged to Miss E. J. Carnell, of the Country Library Service, who came to England from New Zealand for the purpose.

The interest taken by New Zenlanders in studying for post-war careers is indicated by the fact that throughout the past year there were never fewer than 4,500 men taking correspondence courses under the direction of the Education and Rehabilitation Service. Of approximated 45,000 men who served with the division during the war, it is estimated that between 10,000 and 12.000 studied courses by correspondence in the Middle East. The Education and Rehabilitation Service 'was divided into groups, ..eight being with the division, one in Bari, and one in Maadi. Each had a staff, a library, and a panel of lectures.
