AIR FORCE BAND
IS TOUR TOO STRENUOUS? (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 17. The Minister of Defence, Mr P. Jones, is taking steps to make immediate inquiries in Australia to see if there is any foundation for the complaints, that the schedule of the R.N.Z.A.F. Band now touring Australia is too strenuous. This follows the publication of a letter received in Wellington from one bandsman, who expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions under which the tour is being made. The writer states that since the band arrived in Melbourne on September 18 to assist in the Commonwealth Loan campaign it has covered 3,600 miles in six weeks, frequently giving performances on the roadside. "We do not see anything but the main streets," he says. "We have no time for sightseeing and just sufficient time for meals." The writer in a later letter said: " We are still having trouble about accommodation, which we think should be better, seeing that we are not given a chance to see anything." The writer added that some of the men were being let off each night to help to relieve the strain.
