NAVAL OFFICER'S GRIT
MINE MADE HARMLESS LONDON, August 30. Lieutenant-commander H. R. Newgass has been awarded the George Cross for making safe a magnetic mine which fell into a large gasholder containing 2,000,000 cubic feet of gas near Gaston Dock, Liverpool, on November 28, 1940. The mine paralysed three docks, and 6,000 persons had to he evacuated. The mine, if it bad exploded, would have wrecked the whole gasworks, which supplies a large part of Liverpool. Newgass, donning oxygen.apparatus, entered the gasholder, lashed the mine to a pillar, and detached the fuse and magnetic primer clock. This dangerous worik took three hours, during which Newgass frequently came out for a rest and to obtain refills of oxygen.
