—Ministerial.— The Minister of Defence (Hon F. Jones), who is at present in Dunedin,. was engaged this morning in departmental business. The Minister, who i« accompanied' by his private secretary (Mr A. Robertson), will leave for Wellington on Monday morning. —Air Passengers.— Passengers for the north to-day-were Miss D. Olive, Mr G. Stevenson (for Christchurch), Mrs B. Sutherland, Miss .Ml Sutherland, Miss K* Standage, Miss M. Green. Mrs G. McGregor (for Wellington), Miss G. Blackwell. Mr and Mrs J. Scott (for Auckland). An Association message from Masterton reports, that Miss . Grace Hoynat, at present senior mathe-. matics teacher at Christ's College. Christchurch, has been appointed principal of St. Matthew's Collegiate School for Girls at Masterton, in place of Mrs Cleghorn, who has resigned. .' A' Press Association cable from London States that Rear-Admiral Crutchley has been promoted to ViceAdmiral and .re-appointed as flag officer of the Gibraltar and Mediterranean . approaches. Vice-Admiral Crutchley served with the New Zealand squadron before the war. Mr A. Hanna, president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, left this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the executive. Mr W. Russell Wood left to-day for New Plymouth, en route to Auckland.

Mr W.'C. Smith has been appointed Secretary of the Marine Department.. Mr Smith, who joined the public service in 1912, has been accountant in the Marine Department since 1937. He served in the last war.

The principals and staff of Megsm E. J. Smith and Lousley met yesterday to bid farewell to Mr E. M. Wilson, who has been a member of the staff for the past 23 years, and is now taking up a position with the State Advances Corporation. Reference was made by several speakers to Mr Wilson's loyal co-operation at all times and to his efficiency, and all expressed regret that he was severing his connection with the firm. Presentations were made to him by the principals and by the staff, after which Mr Wilson replied. Mr J. E. Engel has been appointed' Assistant Public Service-Commissioner.
