LYING AT ROADSIDE
WOMAN FOUND UNGONSGIOUS POLICE INVESTIGATING UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES (P.A.) AUCKLAND, August 18. Detectives are- investigating the unusual circumstances under which 'Mm Emily James Burgess (78), a widow, of Gienfield road, Birkenhead, suffered injuries on Wednesday night'which led to her death yesterday. The woman left her home alone at 6.30 p.m.' to attend a gathering in .Northcote, and was.found 10 minutes later by her daughter lying on the side of the road. She was unconscious, and' her hat was in the middle of the road. The woman was admitted' to hospital the following day, but died without regaining consciousness, A post.mortem revealed laceration on her scalp and a small depressed fracture of, the skull. While the possibility that the wotjian was struck by a car cannot be excluded, it is considered
strange that there wore no bruises or abrasions: on any other part of the body. On the other hand, there is nothing to suggest that Mrs Burgess was the Victim of foul play, or that robbery was the motive, as her money was found intact in her purse.
An inquest was opened this morning and adjourned. ,
