CORRESPONDENCE

RAILWAY TRAFFIC

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —On the afternoon'express from Invercargill on Friday the two cars next to the engine were hauled, locked, and empty from Invercargill to Clinton. At Clinton, as the train was on the point of departing, the doors worn unlocked, the result being that for' the rest of the journey these two carriages were Occupied by a sprinkling of passengers. For the greater part of the distance between Gore and Clinton ; there were 16 persons standing in' car H, women perched on chair arms, men on grimy platforms, and tiny children in the aisles. Tn the other carriages conditions were much the same. If overcrowding is due to shortage of coal it is excusable; if it is due to shortage of carriages it is understandable; but if people are expected to' travel in tini.eeessarv discomfort through red tape, then it is neither excusable nor understandable. — I am. etc.. ! N.Z.R. Travel in Comfort. August 18. I From inquiries made by the district traffic manager' has been ascertained that sufficient accommodation was available from Invercargill to Gore. If the number of passengers joining the train at Gore warranted the unlocking of the two front cars this should have been arranged by the train staff. The matter is being investigated.—Ed. E.S.]
