OBITUARY
MR JOHN GERRARD Mr John Gerrard, whose death occurred yesterday after a short illness, managed tile Anglican orphanages at Vauxhall for over 20 years with conspicuous success. Assisted by his \vife, Mr Gerrard made a real home for the orphan boys and girls.entrusted to his care, with nothing of an institution about it. Mr and Mrs Gerrard came to. New Zealand from Scotland. At first he was employed in the boot factory of Ross and Glendining's, but later went to the Otekaike Special School to train
boys in bootmaking. His next position was that of manager of the .Anglican. Memorial Home for Boys at Vauxhall. Later, when the girls from St. Mary s Orphanage were transferred to the home at Vauxhall, Mr .Gerrard continued to manage the combined home. He inspired love and affection in all the children in the home.
Mr Gerrard was a lay preacher in the Anglican Church, and for many years taught the boys at St. Matthew's bell ringing. He was an active member of Toe H, a keen member of the Morning Star Lodge of. the Masonic Order, and at one time was kcenlv interested in the work of the W.E.A.
