SOUTHLAND NOTES

INSCRUTABLE EXPECTED TO RACE WELL (Special.) INVERCARGILL, April 27. The Hazlett team—lnscrutable, Aurora Australis, and Black Light, engaged at Washdyke on Saturday, will he raced at Ashburtou on May 5 Inscrutable is expected to make a bold showing over hurdles, as he will be much better suited than he was in the heavy going at Invercargill. Aurora Australis will contest the Timaru Cup in preference to the sprint race. She has yet to win beyond a mile, but she finished! third in the Winton Cup as a three-year-old last season. Black Light will more than hold her own against the hack sprinters, as she is a much better filly on the top of the ground. Hunting Charm claims two engagements on Saturday, and he will probably contest the cup race, in which he will be ridden by B. S. Wilson, who will also ride Green Note and Black Light. Green Note was in great condition when she left here, and she will be hard to beat in the open sprint.

The Wrack stallion, Indianapolis, champion pacer of his day, has been purchased from Mr G. J.< Barton by Messrs S. Todd and M. Nelson, of Inveroargill, and he will in future do stud service in Southland. Since his retirement from racing Indianapolis has stood in the Auckland district, and the oldest of his stock are now three-year-olds. Thrice winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, the Wrack stallion took records of 2.0 2-5 (one milel, 2.36 2-5 (1-lm), 4.15 4-5 (2m), and his performances stamped him as probably the-greatest pacer bred outside America.

Lou Hall, who is engaged in the Washdyke Trot on Saturday, is one of the most promising young pacers raced in Southland this season. She was unlucky to be beaten by Fashion Club in her last start, when she was turning the wrong way round when the field was despatched. The Dillon Hall mare is engaged in a tighter class race 1 , at Forbury next week—an indication thab she is expected to race well at Timaru.
