Ernest Garrett, a picture theatre proprietor, was fined £75 by Mr Goulding, S.M., at Lower Hutt for the illegal purchase of -103 gallons of petrol. The magistrate said the defendant’s license had been whittled to nothing, hut in spite of that lie had obtained petrol from friends. “It is a pity those friends are not before the court, as I think they are as blameworthy .as the defendant. I had considered imprisonment, hut on further consideration think a fine will meet the position,” he said. Seniordetective McLennan said the defendant had been using petrol at the rate of 29 gallons a month. He had refused to disclose where he got it.—Wellington I*.A. AERIAL FLAME-THROWER. LONDON, April 17.—1 t is now revealed that the Twelfth Air Force has been using an aerial version of the flame-thrower against the Germans for nearly a year, says Reuter's correspondent at Allied headquarters in Ita'y. It is a belly-tank filled with an inflammable substance which burns a path 130 ft wide and 250 ft long On striking the ground.
