PRINTING TRADES DISPUTE

CONCILIATION HEARING

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. The printing trades dispute_ came .before the Conciliation Council to-day. The employers are rejecting all the union's claims, counter-claiming the award of 1938, subject to modifications in accordance with subsequent legislation.

Mr K. Baxter, advocate for': the workers, pointed out that the award was made seven years ago. He said that they were of the opinion that the time was ripe ■ for the employers to recognise in some tangible form the nonaggressive attitude of the employees over that period, and to appreciate the fact that they had not improved their conditions or wages to the same extent as other industries. "We think that, with the certainty* of victory, even though it may be much further off than most people imagine, the printing industry will receive a mighty stimulus," he said. "We know that other interests, both in New. Zealand and overseas, are considering the question of the establishment of additional publications in New Zealand. We think it would be well for the employers to take a note of this indication of coming events and form a close alliance, with their employees in some practical way."
