RICCARTON SIDELIGHTS

WELL-BRED YOUNGSTERS

(Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 27. The record turnover of £156,138 10s (it Riccarton on Saturday was made up of £66,934 10s on the win machine, and £89,204 on the place machine. The individual race figures were: —Middleton Handicap, £13,758; Spring Nursery Handicap, £12,377 10s; Apprentices' Handicap, £18,638 10s; New Zealand Cup £25,434 10s; Welcome Stakes £16,544; New Zealand Derby, £22,010; Stewards' Handicap. £22,804 10s; and Riccarton Handicap, £24,571 'los. Typhoon was a 200 ticket better favourite than the second choice, Tara King, in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday, and carried over £3,500 on both machines. His supporters, however, did not get much satisfaction for their support of the Levin gelding, as he backed out when the barrier went up and was hopelessly out of the race from the outset. Typhoon wore a hood on the track before the meeting, but this gear was discarded on Saturday, and, no doubt, the change had something to do with his failure to get away. Dancing Water, winner of the first division of the non-totalisator race on Saturday, is a well-grown filly by Plialeron Bay from Russian Ballet, who is by Nightmarch from Praise, the dam also of.Serenata and Representative. Russian Ballet won several good races for Mr G. R. Grace, of Wanganui, who bred and owns Dancing Water.

Double Cross, second to Dancing Water, is a ihree-year-old gelding by Defaulter from Royal Baby., by Chief Ruler, and is being raced by his breeder, Dr Louisson. Like others of the Defaulter breed, he has not been hurried, and is likely to develop into a good performer. Miss Medlev ran her best race to date when she filled third place to Dancing Water and Double Cross. She is a com-pactly-built three-year-old- by Salmagundi from Rebel Lass, by Robespierre from Toti dal Monte, the dam also of Rebel Song, Silvox, Screamer, and Haughty Toti. Haughty Toti was sold to. Mr T. R. George, who bred Gigli from her and sold him to his present owner. Miss Medley has been given plenty of time and her effort suggests that she will soon enter the winning list. Essay, a much-discussed winner at Riccarton, was bred at Hunterville by Mr T. A. Duncan, who sold her at Trentham for 340 gs. Site is by Christopher Robin, who was imported in 1940 by Mr Duncan. Christopher Robin was for some years in Australia before coming to New Zealand, and sired several winners there. Essay's dam, Hippolvta, is by Gainseourt from Martianette, Martian by Equiias, and so comes from the same family as Oratress, Martian Chief, Hunting Lodge, Oratory, Concentrate, Oratorian, and others.

Loch Derg, who showed a turn of speed for a good way in the Welcome Stakes, is a bay filly by Paper Slipper from Water Power, a good performer for her trainer, P. T. Hogan, a few years ago, and now at the stud of her breeder, Mr L. C. Hazlett, who bred Loch Derg. Another youngster by Paper Slipper to make a bold showing was Gold Spur, who was narrowly defeated in the Spring Nursery after acting as pacemaker from the start. He is a bay colt from Cetchela, an Australian-bred mare by Cetignc. One of the most attractive movers in Ihe preliminary for the Spring Nursery Handicap was Nighislalk, a bay filly by Nightmarch from Moorbird, by The Ace from Moorfowl, by Autumnus from Kirriemuir.

A! Sirat, winner of the Welcome Stakes, is a brown colt by Foxbridge from Ann Acre, by Acre from Lady Lois,, by Lucullus from Persis, by Marble Arch. Ann , Acre was not raced, and is a half-sister to Kentucky, a Great Easter Handicap winner. Lady Lois was an Avondale Stakes winner, and is a sister to Tuahine and Nucleus and a' half-sister to Gay Seton. Probably the most impressive win on Saturday was (hat of Tara' King, who outclassed his opponents over tlie final stages of the nine furlong Riccarton Handicap. He made light work of his solid impost

of 9.3, and is now entitled to be one of tile favourites in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which he has been allotted 8.10. He will be again ridden by W. Broughton.
