—Air Passengers.— Passengers from the north yesterday were Mrs L. Grieves, Mrs Andrews and infant (from Auckland), Mr J. Sabor, Mr J. J. and Mrs Kernshaw, Mra Nock and infant, Mr and Mrs C. J. Mac Kay (from Wellington), Mr J. H. Mill. Mr J. Salmon (from Christchurch). . Passengers north-bound this morning were Mr and Mrs C. R. Don, Mr C. Kemp, Dr M. Falconer (for Christchurch). Mr N. E. Jones, Mr J. K. (MoDougall, Mr R. S. Colquhoun, Mr A. P. O'Shea, Mr F. Johnston. Mr V. Elliott (for Wellington). Sir Harry and Lady Batterbee will arrive in Dunedin on Wednesday, and will be guests at Wain's Hotei. Mr P. G. Connolly, M.P., left by the express this morning for Wellington. Mr H. F. Butcher, of the Ministry of Works, who had been visiting Dunedin in connection with the erection of the pathological block of buildings, left by to-day's express on his return to Wellington. Professor J. N. Findlay left by tha express this morning on the first stage of his return to South Africa. Inspector H. Scott, of Palmerston North, has been appointed superintendent of police in Christchurch from December 1, when Superintendent k T. Shanahan. of Christchurch', will retire. Superintendent Shanahan has held his present position in Christchurch for the last three years. Chief-detective T. E. Holmes, who has been in charge of the detective office at the Dunedin Central Police Station throughout the war period, has been promoted to the rank of sub-in-spector, and will be transferred to Christchurch in charge of the detective office there. He will replace Sub-in-sipector J. B. Young, who has been promoted to inspector, and transferred to Invercargill. Mr Holmes was appointed to Dunedin from Christchurch in August, 1938. - (Mr H J Dixon, S.M., who has teen stipendiaryvmagistrate for the Central Otago circuit for a number of years, will retire at the end of the present year. Mr A. E. Dobbie, S.M., who was formerly registrar of 'the Supreme Court at Invercargill, and who was for a time acting registrar at Dunedin. has been appointed to succeed Mr Dixon. Professor J. R. Elder, who has occupied the chair of history at Otago University' for 25 years, and is retiring at the end of the present year, and Professor J. N. Findlay, who has occupied the chair of philosophy for 11 years, and has been appointed' professor of philosophy at Grahamstown University, South Africa, were honoured at a dinner given by the professors of the Arts and Science "Faculties, on Thursday night. About 30 members of the faculties were. present, Professor T. D. Adams, Dean of the Arts Faculty, being | chairman. The toast to the departing profesfeors was proposed by Professor R; Lawson, chairman of the Professorial Board, who spoke of the valuable services both had given to the University. Professor Elder, in his reply, reviewed his work in the department of history, and expressed his kindly appreciation to all who had assisted him in hiß professorial duties. Professor Findlay said his experience in Dunedin had been of great value to him, and he would look back on his association with Otago University with much pleasure. Professor Findlay left Dunedin by the express this morning en route to South Africa.

The Hon. Mr F. M. Forde, deputy Prime Minister of Australia, and Olra Forde, accompanied by Mr F. R. Sinclair, Secretary of the Army Department, and Mr K. C. Hardie, his secretary will arrive in Dunedin to-mor-row, and will stav at Wain's Hotel. The Hon P. C. Webb will accompany the party. To-morrow afternoon the party will make a tour of the Southern Lakes by air. During his short visit to Dunedin, Mr Forde will inspect the . Industries Fair.
