SAIPAN CAMPAIGN FUTILE. ATTAGKS BY ENEMY REMNANTS (Rec. 12.50. p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 11. Mopping up operations continued on Saipau on Sunday. Small segments of enemy troops who continued to make futile attacks were killed or driven into temporary refuge, to be hunted down later, says a Pacific fleet communique. Many enemy survivors who had been driven into the sea on Saturday night were found in hulks of ships wrecked offshore, and were killed or captured. A number of the enemy found swimming were taken prisoners. Light surface units of the Pacific fleet shelled Guam on Sunday, and our shore-based fighters attacked Pagan Island on Friday. Venturas bombed Paramushiro and,' Shumushu (Kuriles) before dawn on Monday. Several fires were started. AH our planes returned undamaged.- Liberators bombed Truk atoll before dawn on Monday. An antiaircraft position on Moeu Island, was bombed.
