DEER MENAGE

DEPARTMENT TAKING ACTION The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) has written to the Dunedin Amenities Society assuring it that the department fully appreciated the desirability of doing everything possible, even with reduced man power, to combat the deer menace. The letter stated that the department had tried poisoning with salt licks, but this had been unsuccessful. Another method of poisoning would be tried out shortly. Good work had been done in some localities by means of snares, and but for the war and the consequent shortage of suitable material, this method of destroying deer could be extended. The letter concluded by thanking the society for its interest. The letter was read to a meeting of the committee of the society yesterday, Mr James Begg stating that it was satisfactory to note that the department was trying out more than one method for destroying deer. Mr George Simpson said that, although lie realised that very little could be done in war time, he hoped that the matter would not be allowed to stop where it was. He gave from his own experience several illustrations of the serious nature of the depredations of deer, and he urged that the society keep this problem in the forefront of its activities.
