HALTED NEAR LOYANG CHINESE GRIP ON VITAL RAILWAY LOOSENED (Rec. 11 a.m.) CHUNGKING, May 7. Chinese forces have halted the Japanese about nine miles from Loyang. The enemy failed to advance further, savs a Chinese communique. The Japanese entered Hsiangcheng and later moved against Yehsien. Tho Japanese are developing their advance along the Peiping-Hankow railway, and have reduced the Chinese-held gap in the line to' 40 miles. They entered Yencheng in an advance to the south. General Stilwell's communique saya that- tho Chinese and American air force Strafed the Japanese along the Loyang ' road, inflicting 300 to 400 casualties, and destroying tanks, armoured cars, and trucks. The communique reports that United States Liberators Inst night attacked Saigon, starting many large fires. Other Liberators bombed tho docks and other installations at Haiphong. Mitchells strafed 12 large samnaus off Hongkong, causing many casualties.
