RELEASE WELCOMED BY PRESS
(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 7. The whole Indian Press, nationalist or British-owned, warmly welcomed the release of Gandhi, says the Bombay correspondent of ' The Times.' There is a nation-wide feeling that credit for the release is due to Lord Wavell, whose prestige, already high, has been further increased. Hindu commentators find the Government's compassion (politically significant. The' Calcutta 'Statesman' agrees that in the event of Gandhi's recovery there are promising possibilities on the ground that lie knows when to change tactics.
