BEACH MYSTERY
GIRL OF EIGHT YEARS MISSING BURIAL FEARED UNDER FALL OF EARTH (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 7. Colleen Trott, the eight-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs C. E. Trott. of Haw era, disappeared while playing on Ohawe Beach at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The child was playing with her brother, Colin Trott, aged nine, and another companion, Mervyn Gates, also aged nine, near a recent fall of earth below the cliffs about 200yds from the entrance of Ohawe Beach. Ihe boys returned to their mothers at the beach, but when they were sent back to get the little girl she was nowhere to be seen.
A .large party of holiday-makers searched the cliff t..j>, the nearby river, the swimming pool, and the beach, while police, campers, and residents patrolled the foreshore. A small fall of oarth late on Wednesday night suggested that there might have been a similar fall near the base of the cliff where the child was playing, and it was suggested that she might have been buried. Steps are to be taken to investigate this possibility.
