On Viti Levu, United" States troops and Fijian guerrillas co-operated in a practice night manoeuvre. The Fijians were to raid the American camp and were to chalk white crosses on every objective they could destroy. It was a night bright with moonlight. The i Americans posted double guards. But' they saw nothing . . . until it was light Then the morning sun revealed white crosses on every military objective in the camp, on four chairs and a table in the orderly room, in which two men had been on duty all night, on the bottom of six . cake pans which tin? mess sergeant had put in thr- oven in the early hours of the morning, and, final indignity, on the seat of the pants of the sergeant of the guard ! The story is vouched for by an American Army publication.
