J IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY ACTIVITIES Tho monthly meeting ot the WakariKaikorai improvement society was heid in the aciiooi nail »ast 'iliurjaay, Mr. J. A.leu presiding over a tair attendance. Mackenzie. After outlining the matters which had been put. before Jdv Mackenzie— uameiy, provision of shelters, alterations to t.ine-taole, Saturday and Sunday service, and alterations to concession tickets, Mi Allen stated that the deputation had received quite a sympathetic hearing, and, while Mr Mackenzie had promised full consideration to ( the matters brought forward, lie had also drawn the attention of the deputation to the great difficulties under which bus services were operating to-day. Mr C. P. Allen also spoke on several aspects ot the matters put before the transport manager In response to a request made by the society, the town clerk advised that it was not possible to do more than pave one footway in each of the remaining streets in the WakaH and education blocks This reply occasioned considerable discussion, members considering that, making all due allowances for the conditions caused by the war, the reply was not * sufficient answer, nor were the reasons given an adequate excuse for depriving the residents of,'proper footways. Mr T. C Noonan moved, Mr C. K. Robinson seconded—" That the Works Committee of the council be asked to meet a deputation from this society on the ground to go fully into the.matter of paving the footways throughout the sub-division." This vras carried unanimously, members present pointing out tba>, some of the area had been occupied for over five years and that the-footpaths were still a quagmire after rain. The deputation appointed to meet the Works Committee comprised Messrs i Alien, C P Allen and the secretary. Mr C. P. Allen brought forward the matter of rendering assistance in the gardens for those, women in the district whose menfolk were overseas and who wore finding difficulty in getting their gardens done. It was decided that something in this direction could be done, a sub-commit tee to handle the mailer, consisting of Messrs C. W. Robinson (convener), W. T. Inilay. and Mesdames Cubitt and Bauld. being appointed. Letters on the matler ot vandalism throughout city and suburbs were received from the town cierk and the Dunedin Amenities Society These made very sorry reading, and members present were in thorough accord on the subieel of the utmost, co-operation in anything which would tend to check this growing evil. Messrs C. W Robinson and T. C. Noonan were appointed a sub-committee to interview responsible residents with a view to their appointment as honorary rangers as outlined by the letter from the Amenities Societv.

Several members spoke strongly on the condition of the gully in Balmacewcn road, below Lynn . street, drawing attention to its'use as a tip It was pointed out thai. the continued depositing of decaying vegetable matter had caused this place to become rat-infested It was decided to draw the council's attention to the matter. The Chairman advised thai he had arranged for a concert party to give, an entertainment at the Wak.ari Hospital before Christmas. 1

The draft of a letter to go forward to various Cabinet Ministers regarding the establishment of a community centre in VVakari was before the meeting This asked for the provision of facilities for kin-/j dergarten and sundry other arlivilies After discussion this was approved The executive officers of the societv were elected to act as an emergcucy committee.
