LONDON, .July 16.—The Allied invasion of Sicily has caused a flare up throughout the Balkans. All leave for Axis troops has been cancelled. The Home radio quotes a report from Bagdad that the Commander-in-Chief .inspected British troops in Persia yesterday, and all military leave h'as been suspended. .Renter's correspondent at Istanbul says that according to reports reaching there Allied landings in Sicily were the signal for renewed widespread attacks against Italian garrisons in the Balkans. Yugoslav Patriots killed at least 400 Italians in a lightning swoop against a barracks in the Dalmatian Islands on the Adriatic coast opposite Italy. The revolt spread unchecked, and the Italian occupation authorities- were forced to de- <» j cree general mobilisation in Albania before the situation could be got under control. •RUSSIAN DRIVE. 'LONDON, July 17.—The spearbead of the Russian drive is reported to be within 15 -miles of Orel. EIGHTH ARMY'S PROGRESS. LONDON, July 16.—The Eighth Army has broken through the Len- ! - tini bottleneck and bias advanced into the plain of Catania within six miles of the port, states the ' 'Daily Telegraph's ' correspondent ~ at Allied headquarters in North Africa. The Eighth Army's advance guard smashed the German tanks fighting furiously to hold the Allies along the coast road north of Lentini. , Renter's Algiers correspondent says the picture of the whole Sicilian front is one of greaij
encouragement. The Allies • are advancing -well and consolidating their positions, proving themselves more than capable of beating off enemy counter - attacks. The Eighth Army, with British airborne troops, captured an important communications centre (unnamed) some miles south of Catania. The Germans are, fighting hard, but -we are driving them steadily northwards. AACHEN DEVASTATION. RUGBY, July 16.—Throe hundred acres at Aachen were devastated on Tuesday night, and 27 factories have already been identified as destroyed or damaged, according to a photographic record of the raid.
