SUFFER RESISTANCE
GERMANS SUPPORTING ITALIANS 7,000 AXIS PRISONERS TAKEN ((Rec. .9.50 a.m.) LONDON, July 13. The Allies' advance, supported by the air force and fleet, is continuing satisfactorily all along the front, says a report from Algiers. The enemy defence in the coastal zone has been virtually annihilated, and Cape Passero is now entirely in Allied hands. More than 7,000 Axis troops, chiefly Italians, have so far been taken prisoner iu Sicily. A broadcast from Algiers radio A says the Battle of Sicily is becoming "more fierce, with the Germans strongly supporting the Italian field units. British and Axis forces clashed two miles west of Floridia. The Americans are advancing east of Gela, having repelled fresh Axis counter-attacks. The Allied troops now occupy over 300 square miles of the island.
ißeuter's Algiers correspondent says units of the South African Engineering Corps, who had been "the vanguard in all the North African campaigns, are with the Allied forces in Sicily. They have the most important job of seeking water supplies. Shortage of water will be one of the early problems' the Allied troops will have to face. The island lacks adequate supply, even in peace time. .
