IN DIEPPE RAID

LIEUTENANT HARRY NEES MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES News has been received that Lieutenant Harry M. Nees, Eoyal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve, has been mentioned in despatches in connection with the Dieppe raid. The announcement will be warmly welcomed by this young officer’s wide circle of friends in Dunedin. In spite of the fact that it is bearing a tremendous burden in the war, the Royal Navy, often proudly and affectionately known as “ The Silent Service,” does not bestow honours with an indiscriminate hand. It can be taken for granted, therefore, that every honour received has been thoroughly well earned. Knowing his capabilities as ft sailor and being aware of his courage and of his keenness for the task overseas for which he volunteered, yachtsmen friends of Lieutenant Nees will hardly be surprised at the announcement indicating that his services have

won special recognition. About two years ago Lieutenant Nees was on his way to England, and, largely because of his experience in Otago waters and his natural ability to adapt himself quickly to new conditions, he was soon granted a position as second in command and navigating officer of one of the Royal Navy’s speediest ships. _ So well did he acquit himself that last October he was promoted to command one of those fast little warships which are such a constant source of annoyance to enemy vessels in or near the English Channel and in the North Sea. Heavy demands are made on these speedsters of the sea, and evidently the 'young officer from Dunedin has been playing a prominent part in the frequent sorties. Lieutenant Harry Nees is the younger son of Mr and Mrs B. H. Nees, of Cannington road, and is an old boy of Maori Hill School, of which he was dux in his last year. i
