No words in 51 r • Churchill’s latest address will have been read with wider approval than those in which lie said: “ 1 wish most particularly to identify the British Government with President Roosevelt’s recent warning that those guilty of Nazi crimes will have to stand before tribunals in every land whore their atrocities were committed, in order that an indelible warning may bo given to future ages, and that successive generations of mankind may say ‘ So perish all who do the like again.’ ” This was what was threatened and was not done after the last war. There was no trial of the ex-Kaiser and his accomplices, there being no law under which they could bo tried, hut a law must bo made to moot the case of their baser successors who have made the name of Germany synonymous with the most wholesale crimes. Their black record of the present war is still growing, though there has been nothing like it in cold, calculated bestiality since the dark ages which, under the name of a “ new order,” they would revive. The starvation of Greeks and the executions and concentration camps wherever their power lias reached are being supplemented now, rather than followed, by a reinvigorated and extended campaign against Jews in accordance with the mania, more than policy, by •which their depravity was first signalised. All the remaining Jews in their puppet State, Slovakia, are to be deported within three months. Close on 200,000 arc threatened with deportation from Holland, Even in Vichy Erance, which the Germans do not occupy, a campaign of terrorism against these people has been, instigated with the co-operation of the obsequious Laval Government, though France was the first country to treat Jews as equals. Jews have been dragged from their homes and trucked like cattle to Eastern Europe, where many of them have become the victims of mass murders. It is good to read that a French military governor lias had to be dismissed for refusing to have any part in these medieval infamies; French feelings generally arc revolted, and the Roman Catholic Church has appeared as the protector of the inuchsuffering race. The last peace treaty was largely of British making, and thousands of Britons agreed with all Teutons afterwards that it dealt much too harshly with amiable Germany. It is to bo hoped that, for tho avoidance of that future complaint, Great Britain will stand aside when next German crimes have to bo judged, and the penalties for those will be fixed solely by French, Poles, Greeks, Russians, and Czechs.
