ALCOHOL MANUFACTURE
NEW METHOD DISCOVERED NEW YORK. September 8. A new method of making alcohol which dispenses with distilling was revealed at a meeting of the American Cuemical Society. The method is a washing process using fusel oil, which whisky, makers now throw out. Chemists express the opinion that it promises to be the cheapest and biggest source of alcohol and may furnish enough to supply the entire war needs for synthetic rubber and explosives. The oil extracts alcohol from all sorts .of watery wastes never previously used, including wastes of paper mills and sawmills. The process, which also extracts acetone, has not been used commercially, but has worked successfully in the laboratory. AMERICAN PRODUCTION SHIPS AND AEROPLANES LONDON, Sept. 9. Mr Wendell Willkie, at a Press conference, said that in August the Axis sank 500,000 tons of United Nations shipping, while America alone produced 600,000 tons of new shipping. By January, America would be producing 1,000.000 tons a mouth. He added- that in August American plane production was 5,000 machines. In a year’s time it would be at the rate of 10,000 a month.
