BURGLARY ALLEGED
SAFE FOUND IN LANE The story of how a young man, at the instigation of a constable, gave chase after another man who bolted out of a lane on the night of September 2 was told in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Victor Hoyden Curline, aged 39, was charged with breaking and entering the premises of Wardells Ltd., in George street, and stealing a safe and £3 13s in money. Curline was also charged with breaking and entering George Dyer and Co.’s premises at the end of the lane, and stealing a pinch bar, valued at IDs. Following the burglary alleged against Curline, a safo was found_ in the lane. The charges against him, conducted by Detective-sergeant Hall, were part heard, and the hearing adjourned until Monday next. The young man who assisted the police, James Andrew Barclay, stated that he was with a friend on the night in question when he heard a woman exclaim, and then someone called out “ Hold that man.” Ho thought it was a case of hag-snatching, and chased after a man who bolted across the street from the lane. Ho ultimately caught up with him in Filleul street, the man attempting to strike him with a torch ho carried. The man, whom ho identified as the accused, asked witness to be a sport and let him go. Witness was then joined by bis friend and a constable, and accused was taken to a taxi. He was wearing the gloves produced. In the taxi accused asked the constable to open a window, so that he could get a little fresh air, as it would be the last ho. got for some time. Mr Bundle congratulated witness on coming to the assistance of the police. In doing so he was not commenting on the crime or accused’s alleged connection with it, the Magistrate said. Evidence relating to the taking of photos, at the scene of the alleged crime was given by Constable Olaridge. Mr A. G. Neill, who appeared for Curline, asked for bail, but this was refused, accused being remanded in custody until Monday next. >
