WEATHER LAPSE
A WINTRY SNAP A sharp drop in temperatures early this morning thrust the early spring bank into winter. Cold rain showers falling in the city had at times flakes of snow in their midst, so it was hardly surprising that fairly heavy snow showers were experienced on the hills, resulting in a moderate mantle of white covering them to a low level. The coldness will make the advent of rain less welcome, for it must cause a setback to early growth. In the city the rainfall for the period of 48 hours till 9 a.m. to-day was only .28in. Since yesterday morning the rain has been falling over a much wider area, and few parts of the province have escaped. Nowhere has it been heavy, and it lias been lighter inland than in tho city. Yesterday and last night showers fell ‘between Oturehuu and Cromwell, and in the Boxburgh-Law-rence districts. Very light rain also fell on the Maniototo Plains, it being referred to tliere as “ a dust remover.” Altogether tho break in tho weather will do practically nothing towards easing the drought conditions some areas are experiencing. A cold south-westerly breeze was generally in evidence to-day, and most of the high country carried a light coating of snow.
